I got one very interesting question from one member enrolled for the free make money online course and the question was very simple yet very interesting and so I thought I will share the answer here. He asked that

Why I do not recommended AdBrite Along with Adsense as that can increase the actual earning of website.

He also gave a very simple example

Let us say that my site gets 1000 Page Views per day and I get $n as eCPM in Adsense. If I set higher than $n eCPM for AdBrite Ads and then have Adsense as default fall back to AdBrite then we make same from each page views for Adsense and when AdBrite has higher paying Ads they show Ads giving you maximum revenue for your site.

The answer to the question is mathematically you get more money but it should not be taken only from mathematics point of view and you should also consider other aspects of AdBrite. Before I discuss on the aspects would like to share that I have done a detailed AdBrite review earlier and today will just discuss on the aspect of having Adsense as default to AdBrite.

1. eCPM is not everything

eCPM is the USP for making us feel that we may make more money but the most important aspect for any Ad network you wish to use you should not prefer them only based on eCPM but also based other factors and one of them is Fill Rate.

Let us take the same example. Let us say that in 1000 Page Views AdBrite only shows 10 Ads at your elevated eCPM and so do you think it is worth the pain to have your page view go through AdBrite.

2. Quality of ads

The other important aspect for choosing any Ad Network is quality of Ads and for AdBrite there are very few good ads in AdBrite. They do not have very strict policy for Adult Ads approval and if you opt for manual approval process then you may end up hours of time seeing ads and approving each of them.

Can you not use the same time at some more useful area of your site and gain extra traffic than the extra eCPM cents?

3. Give more ad-space to better performing ad network

The next important thing according to me is you should focus more on serving more Ad impressions to Ad Networks which have higher earning potential.

Let us again take the same example and let us say we split AdSense and AdBrite on 50-50 page views basis. Now the answer to the question "Which one would give me more revenue?" is the one you should be using more on your site.

Yes if you have very high number of page views per month it may be good idea to experiment with more Ad networks but not when you are just starting out and have smaller set of data to experiment.

I myself use Adsense as default to other networks but only when they have better earning potential than Adsense.

I hope this answer the question and if you have more question or suggestion on the same do leave them in comments below.

Google Adsense team has shared the percentage they share with Adsense publisher for two of their products - AdSense for content and AdSense for search.

From the Official Word

AdSense for content publishers, who make up the vast majority of our AdSense publishers, earn a 68% revenue share worldwide. This means we pay 68% of the revenue that we collect from advertisers for AdSense for content ads that appear on your sites. The remaining portion that we keep reflects Google's costs for our continued investment in AdSense

.

.

We pay our AdSense for search partners a 51% revenue share, worldwide, for the search ads that appear through their implementations.

The Only thing that I did not like is

Since launching AdSense for content in 2003, this revenue share has never changed.

But as far as I can trust my memory some news from the owners in some press conference when Google went public suggested that they shared close to 80%. I am sure that was and is actually true for some large publishers.

I have been using Google AdSense to monetize my forums, blogs and other websites for as long as I can remember. In fact it is one of the first few methods I tried, but with time I migrated to other methods like CPM Ad networks and direct sponsors as well as affiliate marketing, which made AdSense secondary. I was still making decent income monthly from it and so always used it, but whenever I could I would use alternate methods over Adsense.

Over last 1+ year I have made an active effort not to divert myself from AdSense and keep AdSense as primary method of making money for my forum MBAGuys.net and I have seen some really good results. I have experimented a lot over last one year's time to increase my income from AdSense and I will share them with you.

Why Yet Another AdSense Tips?

The main reason for this is majority of websites who talks about AdSense tips will talk about high paying keywords and Ad position to increase CTRs or will suggest creating websites for ads (Made for AdSense Type) but what I am going to tell you is about using AdSense or any other CPC network for your actual business.

Remember that I will not share much specific data because of AdSense Terms of Service.

So let us get into the tips.

1. Right Aligned vs. Left Aligned Ads

I have seen over times that Ads within the content which are Aligned Left perform far better than those which are aligned right.

I am not sure why but this is true and I can only think of one reason that left aligned units look more like a content that right aligned units.

2. Ad Sizes - Use large size.

In my forums I have preferred leaderboard for quite some time but many AdSense tips suggest to use rectangular ad units and when I experimented with rectangular ad units results were amazing.

I placed 2 rectangular ad units between my first and second post of each thread and these ad units performed better than the leaderboard above the fold.

3. Ad Blocking

You need to be constantly looking at your own ads and see if you find ads which are mainly made for AdSense type of website. If you see any such websites block them. See official statement as to how to block ads here. As a general rule I always block free websites like blogspot.com / hubpages.com or even .co.cc domain ads from appearing in my AdSense units. This helped me increase average per click revenue to a large extent.

4. Ad Placement

You may be aware of Google heat map and above the fold ad placement but I was willing to experiment one step further then what Google suggested and found that ad placed within the content works best. Not above the primary content.

And

5. Add AdSense to High Traffic Websites

As your site grows you tend to become eligible for better CPM ad networks and this is where you tend to make less use of AdSense and concentrate more on the CPM Ad network and direct ads. It is good to be going that way but do not forget to experiment with AdSense time and over again.

Few months back I decided to put AdSense back on sites which I have removed as I had too many direct advertisers and I saw very good results. This not only helps me make some extra money with AdSense but also helped me understand that I need to change the pricing of my advertising space to my direct advertisers.

6. Add AdSense to Low Traffic Websites

Many people believe that having ads on new sites is not worth it but at times in many experiments they think that this website failed and do not concentrate much on that site either.

Same is the case with me and over a period of time I have done lots of experimentation and forgot about those sites but adding AdSense to these websites as well gave a really good boost to my AdSense earnings.

See for yourself: GlobalDevelopers.net / OperaOfLife.com. It just adds to the overall earning for me without me even spending a second on that websites currently.

7. Use AdSense for Search

I always prefer to have AdSense for Search on the most prominent position on all my forums and this means I not only add to the ad revenue of my websites but it also enhances the user experiences. After all I started this article saying I am not suggesting tips for MFA websites but mainly for your real business websites.

8. Use AdSense for Feeds

I have not seen very decent CTR for Feeds and it also need lots of RSS readers to make anything decent but then it's not bad when it just adds to your overall income month on month basis. RSS Readers are loyal readers of your site and many believe that it's not worth showing them ads but I opted to display ads below my feed items and results were surprisingly good.

9. Link Units

Many AdSense tips suggest to use Link units but do not suggest where and how to use them effectively. I have seen that horizontal link units below the Navigational links works just perfect with very good CTR and good eCPM as well and rectangular link units within the content. Link units are very sleek which do not take up much of your Ad space and so with less space it can make you good money.

10. Section Targeting

Section targeting is an AdSense feature that allows you to suggest specific sections of your site that should be used when matching ads. You can read more about it here. It is a way to tell Google AdSense to show ads related to specific content. In forums each post from user comes with details about the user and other things but with section targeting you can make sure you show ads related to content of you post and not related to content of user details and other content. Similarly on blogs you can make sure you show ads based on content of the pots and not related to content of the comments or any other content in the sidebar.

Final Thoughts

I think that the key with optimizing with CPC ad networks is to experiment. Some may work for me and not for you and some may work for you and not for me and so the key is to keep trying different combinations until you find the one that works best for you.

After making a new blog post about Best Technology Funds today afternoon on my Mutual Fund Blog I saw some interesting Google Adsense Ads on it.

And I started searching if there is anything new from Google and found that Google sent seroundtable a statement confirming a test. Google said:

We are currently running a limited test in which a small number of users are seeing ads that are marked based on signals related to quality and relevance. This experiment is part of our ongoing efforts to help users find what they're looking for, and we're closely monitoring feedback.

Initially my thought was that it has something to do with Ad Targeting feature where some advertisers are targeting my channel but after investigating on Go4Expert.com I saw that the advertisers targeting Go4Expert.com Channel don't have such stars.

Second experiment on browser with cleared cache's and cookies does not have such yellow star ads which means Featured ads are shown only when Google have enough data about user's interest.

What Kind of Featured Ads you see ?

If you are into making money online you should be aware of Adsense but when it comes to making money with Adsense there are lots of factors which can affect your earnings and one of the major factors that can affect your earnings is your Clickthrough Rate (CTR).

What is CTR?

CTR is a measure of how often users click on your ads. For example, if you receive one click on your ad after 100 people have viewed that ad, you are said to have a CTR of 1%.

Now as you can understand if you have higher CTR you make more money with any CPC based Ad Network like Adsense, Chitika or Bidvertiser and to increase your CTR you should know what factors can affect your CTR. I'll list a few here which I have seen and experimented over the past years. Remember revealing CTR is against Adsense TOS - so don't expect me to pepper this post with actual numbers.

1. Niche

One of the most important aspects about making money with CPC based advertising is your niche but there are very few people who talk about this point with respect to your CTR. The main reason they do not speak about it is lack of experience or lack of testing. I have Programming Forum and MBA Forum and have pretty much same ad placement below the navigation bar and of same size (Leaderboard) but the CTR of both of them varies a lot and the only things that I can think of is the kind of reader type.

This could be one more reason why Adsense works great for some niche but not for others. If you are ready to experiment with good Adsense alternatives you are definitely bound to make some extra bucks but the problem with webmasters is that they become lazy when it comes to experimenting.

2. Ad relevancy

The second most important of aspect of having good CTR is how relevant your ad is to what your user is looking for. I have always seen that Adsense gets better CTR than Bidvertiser but Chitika beats Adsense by a big margin. The reason Adsense gets higher CTR is they always have good matching ads to the content of the page but that's not always the case with Bidvertiser and Chitika has championed the idea of knowing when not to show ads giving higher CTR. Read the complete Chitika Review of why they have better CTR.

3. Daily / Seasonally

On Go4Expert.com I have seen very good CTR on weekends but the same CTR is not there on weekdays. The main reason could be that I get more visitors to my site on weekdays but that's not the case on weekends and the lesser group of people who visit Go4Expert.com are mainly home users and prefer ads. The same can be applied to holiday season when we have more discount offers which means we have more ads giving a better CTR.

4. Options to "click"

If your user have more options to click and browse on your site there are chances that your CTR would decrease. This was tested with an experiment at Go4Expert.com where we stopped displaying signature links to guests for couple of months. Guess what the CTR shot up which means when there are less links to be clicked on your pages there are more chances that your ads would be clicked.

5. Ad size and placement

When I started searching about how to increase CTR I saw that most of the expert barring few preferred to concentrate more on ad Placement and ad sizes. Better you place your ads higher the CTR. Bigger your ads higher CTR. But then I am not in the camp of changing the design for ads and so I could not experiment my ad placement and size to an extent I wanted but having an ad in header would have higher CTR than and ad in the footer. A rectangular ad after the content works great if placed rightly.

Control what you can control to increase your CTR and don't try too much on it because everything is not under your control.

Feel free to add your own experiences of CTR (without being specific about actual numbers) in comments below.

Chitika – stands for one of the best CPC programs out there for your Search Engine Traffic. When I say best I mean even better than Adsense. I will share with you some nice things in this Chitika review and if you still do not have an account with Chitika Sign up Now, believe me you’ll not regret it.

When it comes to any CPC based program all other programs like Yahoo Publisher Network, AdBrite, Bidvertiser all tend to copy Adsense and are not very different from Adsense and so getting advertiser for them becomes much more difficult. When it comes to Chitika they are not just yet another CPC ad network but are very innovative when it comes to CPC advertising and they are different in more than one way. Let's see how?

1. Non-contextual

Yes they are non-contextual advertisement which means that they do not show ads based on the content of the page. So how do they match the ads then? They do so by showing ads based on the search engine referral keyword. As an example if you visit CodeItWell.com for keyword like Make Money Online you would see Ads related to make money online and if you next time visit the same page with some other keyword you would see ads related to other keywords and not related to make money online. This eventually means good CTR for your ads.

2. Less is more

Chitika do not show ads to all users visiting your site but only to those users which are referred from search engine. So you don't bombard your frequent users with ads. This means you are showing fewer ads, but it does not impact your earnings much because your frequent users are anyway not going to click on ads. This also helps towards better user experience.

3. Different Ad Layout

Adsense does not allow images near the Ad units but when it comes to Chitika, they automatically display relevant images next to the ads! That of course means more CTR and more revenue for you.

4. Innovative Ads

Apart from the conventional ad layout they also offer other ad types like WhitespaceAd Code, Linx Ads where they hardly take up any extra space of your ad inventory and still make you some extra money.

Though Linx Ads are supported by many other Ad Networks, WhitespaceAd is the first time I have seen in Chitika. This emphasizes how creative is Chitika for publishers.

5. Ads Open in New Window

Google Adsense does not support ads to open in a new window or tab but Chitika ads always open in a new window which means you do not loose visitors for ad clicks.

Drawback

They have so many good things but there are two sides of every coin. One thing which I did not like is - premium ads are only shown to US and UK search traffic. This means if you have search traffic from other countries Chitika would not serve premium ads to them. This can be taken care of by having some other Ad Network and specially Google Adsense as default for such traffic.

Sign-up to Chitika

How Bidvertiser works

You display Bidvertiser Text Ads on your website. Advertisers bid for Ad Display spot and depending on the match highest paying ads are displayed to user. This is pretty much same as Adsense with slight difference that Bidvertiser only supports Text Ads and to a very less extent image ads where as Adsense now supports Text and Image Ads.

Advantages

Its exactly on the same model as Adsense and so if you are not eligible for Adsense you can use Bidvertiser or use Adsense and Bidvertiser side by side. Remember if you use both of them make Bidvertiser and Adsense Ads look different as that is a requirement in Adsense TOS.

If you have good site, Advertisers would need to pay higher per click to run ads on your site which means you make more money.

Over time your earnings per click would go higher as you accumulate potentially more advertisers.

You earn for referring new advertisers as well from your site from its Referral Programs.

Minimum Payout for Bidvertiser is $10 which can be easily reached for new bloggers and also it supports Paypal as a payment method.

Bidvertiser supports Free format and so you can make your ad very much blend into content but for Adsense you need to be a premium publisher for this which needs more than 1 million page views per day.

Disadvantages

Till you do not have the Advertisers you would be getting general advertisers in Bidvertiser which means you per click earning is on the very low side.

The Content to Ad Matching is not very good which means you do not get very high CTR ( Click through ratio )

There are very few advertisers who target regions outside of US and so earnings for outside traffic is less at times.

Every site is different and I am sure you can afford to experiment Bidvertiser and see if it works for your site. If it does, well and good but if it does not then also you do not loose anything.

Few mistakes that I see new bloggers make ( including me ) and if you recognize them try to avoid them from now on.

Blogging for Adsense

This is one of the biggest mistake many blogger starts with. First they get the Blog out and the next thing they do is put Adsense ads all over the place and make it look cluttered with Ads. I have seen many blogs having maximum number of allowed Adsense Ads, one after the other thinking more ads fetch more money but actually thats not true. You should realize that its the user who fetches you the money and not Adsense. I can rest assure you how many Ad units you have on your page but if its only you who visit that page then you would make $0.00 every time you see your Adsense account.

Copying from here and there

The other big mistake newbie blogger tend to make is copy the content from other websites and post them. This is many fold a mistake. First its your blog and so it should be your views and content and next is copied content is a kill from Search Engine traffic point of view.

Blogspot / Wordpress Blogs

Yes this is also a mistake. Its always good to experiment and then get into reality and trying your hands on blogspot / wordpress for some experimentation is good but if you are serious about your blog I am sure you can afford a domain name and hosting which are as less as $5 per month to start with. If you can find cheaper than this start with it or else try JustHost / hostgator / GoDaddy. Checkout my experience and review of some of the Best Cheap Shared Hosting providers.

Dead Blogs

I have seen on many forums where people feel proud on the number of blogs they own. The number of websites they own ranges from few tens to hundreds and I am sure if there are few blogs in them it would be dead. If you have a blog I think you should continuously update it with fresh content. People tend to hate if they do not see anything in the RSS Reader for your blog feed

Neglecting User Comments

I have posted so many comments on issues I see on blogs I visited but no one responded to the comments and I was probably the only commenter for many days. If the blog is new, comments would be less but atleast the author should read and reply. Other advantages is this comments help you get more topics. On my finance blog see this comment by one of the user which resulted in a new post for me.

If you have some more to add do so in comments.
